Beautifully crafted, and still on the old stretcher, ready to frame, this is a superb c.1830-50 needlepoint, needlework embroidery of the philosophers of ancient Greece. I believe they are, from left: Aristotle, Homer, Plato? I'm not sure. I know I've seen a painting of this scene, group, and I can't for the life of me just now come up with its artist nor museum. You out there, give me a hand. Email if you recognize it, please. As it is, it's a fabulous framable for office or home. Nicely preserved, as well. Has been hung just as you see it, without frame (see hanging wire on back) but I suggest it be framed and under glass for best preservation and display.
Very good to excellent for age and type. It hasn't any rips, no holes, a few stitches of silk might have deteriorated over the centuries, but not very much. I've shown the backside so you can see the original more vibrant coloring. The display side has faded to a very aesthetically pleasing palette, in my opinion, more fitting for its subject. The mounted outer measurements is 23" x 20". Entirely hand worked in wools and silks.
