A fabulous Napoleon III era French sewing set, fine sterling silver set with 18k layer (vermeil) to have the rich look of gold but not the enormous cost. This rare complete and all original set includes the usual pieces: scissors, thimble, needle case, stiletto, and a bodkin (string or ribbon-threading large needle). The addition of the ear wax spot on one end of the bodkin, and the crochet or tambour hook are more unique. Initially, I anticipated the set might be much earlier, for those added pieces and also the type of leather clad wood case. Marks suggest it is c.1838 to perhaps as late as 1870. Marks are there, the silversmith would help us more accurately tell the date, but it's too tiny to decipher. Stunning old set!
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, the wear only shows on the exterior of the old leather case or box, etui. Even so, it is not torn or missing leather, just has abrasions. A bit of polish would do wonders. The interior, exceptionally well preserved, would suggest it was a gift set kept and not put to use. There are no indications such as hole in thimble or anything else to suggest it's been used. Scissors blades are very sharp, no spoilage of metal, even. A magnificent pattern to the entire set - you'll want to display it open, and go ahead and use it.
