A gorgeous set we found in France, these are approximately life-size bird pairs, and none of them is missing wing nor tail. Mostly unscathed by time, it seems someone has intentionally removed the back extended leg (see images) which seems odd until you put them on a mantel and realize they actually do show at an benhanced angle. This pair would have held tall fluted glass vases (epergne) and likely flanked a matching hand carved clock originally. This larger sized pair are what I look for with idea of turning them into stunning lamp bases. It's a very easy conversion, really. I've done it myself numerous times. The final photo shows a pair in my other home right now - just so you can visualize what I mean. This set has a very sturdy base and elegant anatomical studies of the 4 birds, and would be fabulous under a 25 watt bulb and a silk shade - yes? Full measurements are noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. More often than not, one can find a small pair, or a single separated from both its matching 2nd and the epergnes which once filled them (flower vase). Rare to find a matching pair fo this size and in such fine condition. While those jutting legs seem chip-prone, the rest of the carvings have been spared. Either broken away or purposefully removed, the legs at the back side are gone (each has 3 legs). Photos show all angles - and the fine condition otherwise. I'd make them into a pair of lamps!
