An American oil painting, mid-Victorian era based on elegant light maple oval frame and painting stretchers, her clothing style. Wonderful painting, there is no artist's signature visible. I have not taken it out of frame to see if perhaps a signature is hidden by that wide gold filet. I found her in an anonymous collector's estate in Ohio, and the balance of estate goods are all fine quality, lots of English antiques, Blue transferware, etc., to the extent that one can almost 'know' the collector's eye and love of these old treasures. Was the child a relative? Is she English? I don't typically see English paintings in the maple frames. Can't you just see her hanging in a guest bedroom. Frame is 26" x 22 3/8" oval and 2 1/2" in depth, excellent condition for age. The painting is, as well, and is 20 1/2" x 16" oval, oil on canvas, old wood stretcher. I'd date it all c.1840-60.

Very good to excellent condition throughout, no holes or evidence of restoration on the nicely stretched oil painting, and the frame is remarkably well preserved for its age. A bit of a 'folk painting' feel to her, partly why I think she's an American work of art. Fabulous color palette used, and a beautiful child. Sidelong photo shows you some typical crackle to the canvas. Not a flaw, just age. Again, 26" x 20 1/2" x 2 1/2".
