The entire snuff box is carved of burled wood, topped with a quite unusual back-painted convex glass (eglomise) which is a technically difficult way to do a painting in that you literally paint the frontmost aspects of the painting and layer backwards instead of the other way. Quite a talent to have done this wonderful tiny painting. Quaint little work of art. The mount in pressed brass rather than gold, and I think the entirety dates comfortably to mid-late 1800s.
Very good to excellent condition for age or type. Beautiful wood, lathe-turned The mount has been reattached at some point and shows a little residue of what I fear is glue holding it in place. I consider that it's only flaw apart from a loosening of the painting from the glass up toward the top of the scene (see images). Still, so rare - I've never found another eglomise snuff box. A collection must!
