The French, in the 1700s, found a way to bond 18k gold on silver, and early jewelry items remain, though rare, from that early innovation. This is one from that era, and it is a locket (missing the glass on back side) pendant, possibly a mourning item or love token which would have earlier had a lock of hair inside the locket compartment in back. Interesting, very old cut ruby or perhaps garnets, Persian turquoise, pearls mounted surrounding the small convex oval plaque upon which a Master enamelist has created a little cupid. The back of the locket is 18k gold, as is the pendant bale. Absolutely c.1700s jewelry, and as noted, rare! Yes, found in France. Full measurements noted on the photos.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type, all stones still present in their positions, lovely old piece, entirely hand crafted by 18th century jeweler, goldsmith, enamelists. Yes, I do think it's a gift of love, Something old, something blue - would be a stunning precious gift for a bride, wouldn't it. Photos show it from all sides. The single imperfection would be that the locket back insert is missing its glass. One can have a replacement cut if you desire it to hold a lock of hair, or a love note.
