Late 17th to mid 18th century French Aubusson tapestry panel with a 2.25" vintage border, perhaps a salvage from a much larger wall tapestry - this one is sized and fitted on back to be used to cover a door, though it's wonderful to just hang on wall as well. A superb panel, as noted below, full measurements are noted on the photos, and the weave shown in great detail - a fine wall hanging!

Very good to excellent condition for age and type. As you can see, it's complete and in remarkably stable and fine condition, beautiful wool yarns with that verdure foliage as well as courting couple, castle and exotic bird, as well. Wode dyes for those blues and greens, it comes forward these 300 or so years without any need of restorations or loose spots, open weave areas. It's heavy, has an early 1800s or earlier heavy silk backing and it feels like perhaps an inner linen canvas to help protect the woven panel from damage from downward weight pull on the warp. The old backing still has antique fittings with which it was attached to a door in some castle or palace or chateau, as you see from photo of the back. That backing is faded somewhat and has some wear spots, one or two splits but not of any significance. It will serve well for another hundred or more years. The wool is bug-damage free and clean and has no unpleasant odor at all. Ready to hang and enjoy.
