Black Forest dogs are always rare! I can't find a single chip on this wonderful late 1800s to earliest 1900s hand carved Swiss Black Forest smoker's stand, cigar or pipe caddy and match holder. The base is large, nearly 9" x 7" oval and the larger barrel has a 4 5/8" diameter. Overall, it's just under 7" tall. The dog, alone, is 6" long and 3 1/4" tall and has wonderful anatomical Animalier form.  Superb face. Full measurements appear on our photos for your review.

Very good to excellent condition throughout, age and type considered. No chips of note, though you'll see just a couple of the typical wood worm holes - not many - to account for it's advancing age. Heavy old forest growth wood, relatively light in color, perhaps linden wood. There is an impressed number on bottom, which in its timeframe would be the carver's number so when sold they knew to whom payment was owed. Only a few old carvings bear a carver's name.
