Elegant antique French Napoleon III era 13.5" jardiniere or plant box, a beautiful marquetry inlaid piece with two-toned kingwood veneers, serpentine shape with gilt ormolu accenting and floral inlaid medallion on each side! There are only a handful of names that ring out when speaking of fine old Napoleon III French ebenistes, box or cabinet makers: Vervelle, Tahan, Giroux, Sormani...they all bring to mind the finest of the fine and this piece is surely an exquisite representation of those works even though it bears no maker's marks. Serpentine shape, darker finished veneers framing the center kingwood panels on all sides. Gilt ormolu side handles, ornate bands on both the top and bottom of the box, in addition to the reticulated rim of the jardiniere top! The front and rear have oval Sorrento style floral marquetry inlaid medallions, flowers & foliage in various finish shades. Beautiful! In overall great shape given its age with some slight flaws, this one even has the inner tin liner. An elegant decorative accent or centerpiece, a treasure....don't miss it! Fabulous old French decorative pieces!
Very good condition, age considered! There are a few small spots of missing veneer, mostly at the bottom near corners and visible in the images. No damage or loss to the larger kingwood serpentine sides. The ormolu does have some aged patina, we just briefly went over it with polish to bring out some of the gilding.
