The subject of this very fine mid-1800s Victorian needlepoint tapestry is thrilling - a Royal interior with King on his throne and being introduced to a kneeling subject. One can fairly call up the story of adventure and history it suggests - thrilling and opulent, filled with drama and caught up in fine details, too, like the hanging drapery and its rope and tassels; the feather in the Royal aid's hat. A wonderful palette of colors, it'll accent any decor where antiques are appreciated, and is perfect for shelf or wall display. The frame is a very fine old period frame, c. 1850-70, and is in remarkably fine condition, with just one or two small spots of missing gesso/applique. It is wood with gesso/plaster appliqué and a heavy gold finish. The needlework is matted with a gold-painted filet, and the piece is ready to hang.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type, I see no deteriorated stitches in the silk and wool yarns - tiny stitches, closer to petit-point than gros-point, and typical of the early rather than later needleworks. A wonderful palette of colors, it'll accent any decor where antiques are appreciated, and is perfect for shelf or wall display. The frame is a very fine old period frame, c. 1850-70, and is in remarkably fine condition, with just one or two small spots of missing gesso/applique. It has been re-set into the old original frame and glass is clean inside and out. The backing has been freshly sealed against future dusk or bug damage. Ready to hang. The outer measurement is 24.5" x 20.75" and 1.5" deep (frame), and the aperture showing the needlework is 19" x 16", the actual needlework slightly larger within.
