I am uncertain I have this very capable artist's name correctly deciphered. I read it as "Caillieu 1818". I am still trying to research it. The date is plain to make out, 1818, and the miniature painting is masterfully accomplished so if you know more about artist, or even this uniform, please do email us. I'm grateful for your help. I've long collected fine French portraits in miniature, and the handsome young officers are always of highest intrigue. I wonder about their story. Perhaps the unusual dedication written along the perimeter upper right would give one hints to follow, though I can't readily translate it. I've tried to get very clear images of all of the writing. None of it appears when the painting is in its frame (original). A convex cover glass has protected it perfectly. Look at all this artist was capable of in that 1" face!  Quite remarkable. Definitely treasured, even the frame is in exceptionally fine condition.  He is from the French Restauration period in history, after Napoleon.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type, a stunning painting in miniature, fine representation of a handsome young military officer and his colorful uniform. Is that French Navy?  Help, experts. Even when I look for 1800s French military costumes, the range is broad and I am never quite certain. One flaw, but I think it dates to the original painting. You see a tiny sliver to far left which has a hairline. It's probably been that way for 203 years now, and it is covered by the mat/frame when in place. Just a mention. A magnificent miniature!
