The portrait is superb! The old wood frame is not so superb. But they have stayed together for some 200 years and far be it for me to separate the original mount. The miniature painting is rare - that of someone's heir, darling boy, perhaps spoiled rotten son. Unusual clothing, and it is possible that this is an Eastern Europe youth, perhaps even Russian from the clothing. I have no additional information about whose art it is, nor who the boy of about 8-12 is. I love him more out of his frame. The impossible convex cover glass glares no matter where on the photo table we put it, so look past it. Found in Paris, long ago.

Very good condition for age and type. The frame, to me, detracts a little from this otherwise wonderful little painting. Removed from his frame, the detail and even his facial expression so speaks of a pre-adolescent boy, does it not?  The bands of red against navy/black are bold, unique. I will point out there is a hairline, which we have marked with 'x' for your help in finding it. It is fine, tight, and the wafer is adhered to a backing to be certain it remains that way and does not worsen. Likely the hairline is 100 years old or more. It can be seen if you really tilt to the right angle of light, but is otherwise hard to see. Displays beautifully. I wish he were in a better frame. Might be one to change out if you're a collector.  But if you're a purist, you'll just love this boy as he is. Measurements are noted on the photos, but that frame is 4 3/4" x 4" and about 5/8" thick.
