The face on this handsome gentleman fairly glows, and when you take it out of the frame, you notice it is backed with silver and perhaps copper or gold paint, to reflect light up through the face. Nicely framed, I can tell you it must have been trimmed from the original slightly larger oval in order to fit this frame. Still, no way you'll know that without me telling you, as it displays perfectly well in the same period frame you see. I can date him by his clothing to era between 1810-1830. His forward-swept hair is very Napoleonic, however, so I think to the earlier part of the range of dates. Full measurements are noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, notation of having been trimmed for a re-framing, as it would have been a true oval. The cover glass is also a replacement and is flat rather than the clean-cut oval convex cover glass typical of the age. Even so, frame is nice, and portrait is stunning, no chips nor hairlines or cracks. Beautifully colored.
