Beautiful intimate 9" x 7" devotional painting of Mary and baby Jesus, filled with iconographical symbolism, signed by the Italian artist and dated by same, 1835. The artist, Luisa FLAVIO, does not appear in my artist search engine, and, along with notation of it being a female artist, perhaps means this is the only surviving painting and a personal devotional, perhaps a young novitiate nun. As noted, many symbolic additions in the painting. The watercolor painting is unframed and on heavy 100% cotton rag hand-laid paper, typical of its age. Ready to frame. Very good to excellent condition for age and type. Very slight loss of watercolor, not much visible overall, and 1 very tiny perforation in the paper left of Madonna's elbow. No other issues, signed by artist and dated. Stored in archival folder, ready to be framed to your aesthetic. Small enough to qualify as a portrait miniature, the face of Jesus is 1" chin to hairline, and Mary's is 1.5", chin to hairline. Superb catholic iconographical depiction showing fate of the world, fate of Jesus, in an unusual storyline painting.
