A charming Victorian era 18k gold mourning locket brooch, c.1840-70, still with the arranged locks of dark blond hair within, accented by seed pearls. This is a 2-sided locket, a deep well in front for hair art and a smaller oval hinged back into which perhaps a photo might have been. In it when I acquired it is an old monogram on heavy paper (see photos). I do think the locket is not entirely 18k, but the front case, so beautifully enameled in black, does test 18k. I would think the pin and clasp likely are, as well. Perhaps a lesser karat or even a high gold alloy of brass, rolled gold to the backside. The box shown is not original to they locket brooch, will not close with it inside, and is NOT included. It is one we use for a photo prop, ambiance.

Very good to excellent condition throughout, no chips or cracks or loss to either of the cover glass panels, the front being particularly lovely with a deep beveled rim. The kiln-fired enamel is without loss, as well. This one has been well-cherished. Yes, I feel certain the hair lock has been with it all this time, and it seems there might have been more decoration than the few seed pearls which remain in place. Seed pearls were representative of the tears of the mourner. Full measurements noted on the photos.
