One of the finest hand carved caskets ever, but for a need of a replacement of its rather tattered old silk interior lining. The bird up top is just superb, makes me think of the Animalier bronze sculpture of that era, it is so detailed. No breaks, either, which is quite rare with separate wings as slender as they are, and open pointy beak. Long tail - really a beautiful top to this one. Interestingly, there is a escutcheon on the back side carved just like the front with a keyhole. While there is a working lock on the front of the box, we do not have a key to fit it at listing time. Full measurements are noted on the photos, but it's basically an 8" x 5" outer measurement (not counting cabriole legs) and 7" at tallest.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type. The only flaw I see to report with all that delicate and interesting carving is that the old original 19th century silk lined interior has mostly succumbed to age, and someone will likely want to reline it - quite a simple task, really. The lid will close tightly, but without a key to engage the lock, it seems to want to lift 1/8" in front. Not warped, perhaps a tiny adjustment at hinge. Gorgeous old one, 19th century.
