A gold test affirms the pristine large locket type frame to be 18k gold. I would expect to find a French gold mark, tiny as they are, but it might be on the inner lip of this oyster-shaped double-sided old treasure, and it's not wanting to easily separate to open for me for additional exploration of the pendant, nor to allow more clear photos of these 2 magnificent portraits. I hesitate to pry, not wanting to leave a mark on the gold. It is sometimes the case we have a signature tiny and on the outer rim of these paintings, out of view when in their mountings, or perhaps a tissue within giving us ID or more information about the sitters.  You know it's awfully tempting for me to look inside, but I will leave that to the next owner of this magnificent set.  You have 2 sisters, or perhaps they're best friends. I feel quite certain their fashion puts them in late 1700s. The fine detail is quite incredible on those 5/8" faces, and superb attention to detail on their gowns, as well. Each seated in a rather common wood chair. Full measurements are noted on the photos.

Very good to excellent throughout. Even the very old solid 18k gold locket frame into which the extraordinary paintings are mounted is without dent or damage - obviously a cherished piece. Can be jewelry or hanging, the size if 2.5" x 2" oval plus the bale, large for a locket. Both of the original cover glass panels are convex, making it a bit of an oyster in shape from the side. No flaws to report.
