A superb and larger miniature painting, excellent portrait miniature of a mid-1700s French gentleman, likely an avocate (attorney), his long robe sleeve shows to his right. His library of reference books shelved behind him, and pens arrayed desktop with his inkwell. The detail in his face is splendid. He tucks his hand into his jacket in a formal seated pose that is replete with elegance and importance of position. I wanted to open that backing and see if there were any indications of history, of whom this gentleman was. Alas, it's got an old sealed back and I'm always reluctant to disturb those.  Will leave it to his next owner.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type, he is framed in a wooden frame with gilded or gold leaf edging (the red showing through). The frame has hairlines, backing holding it firmly and one could improve it with a delicate insertion of wood glue, then clamping. The painting is in gouache, but I believe it is on card rather than natural wafer from what I can see unopened. There is a sliver of it showing to his left, along the boundary of the frame - you see? The little painting would be so fabulous for your Bru or other antique doll house walls, such a dignified gent. Or, as well, to add to your own collection of fine antique portrait miniatures.  Imagine that detail in a face only 1" high. The overall measurement of outer frame is 5 1/4" x 4 1/4" oval, and it is approximately 1/2" thick. Yes, there is a cover glass intact. A couple of images show a bit of glare from room/lights.
