Dating to the Napoleon III era (c.1848-1870), this is a larger-than-most calling card case with a parquet of fabulous mother of pearl on both front and back. Lots of shimmer and rainbow reflections from the various panels, and incised decoration covering each one. The cartouche on one side has a pair of birds, and on the front panel is a carved and bas relief diamond-shaped plaque inset with abalone. This one is truly a beauty. The interior would have been fitted with an accordion-pleated card holder which would fan out when opened. That has been lost to time. Outer perimeter is old paper, and the interior has been adapted - you'll probably want to alter it to remove that card divider insert. This one is large enough and beautiful enough to be an evening purse, clutch. Ornamental hinged clasp is strong and will keep your essentials safely inside.

Very good to excellent for age and type. The mother of pearl covers are really excellent - so beautiful, and no panels cracked, missing. Age to the papered outer rim. The original silk lining (lighter blue) is intact, but the original accordion pleated section is lost to time, or rather awkwardly restored by a darker card divider. I'd take that one out, perhaps re-line with old silk and use this one for an evening bag. It might also be the perfect thing to hold your Davidoff cigars, gentlemen. Meanwhile, such a stunning display piece.
