From my collection, it is a painting of a girl, by herself at a later age. A charming portrait of a young girl, noted on back to be Eliza Berchet, 9 years, in an 1873 copy of a portrait painted in 1813 by this same girl who by 1873 was Eliza Goffiola(?), which helps explain why the portrait is dated c.1873, but the child is absolutely a French Empire child. She has put her initials and date on the front edge of the little painting. A talented woman grew from the small child. We know nothing more of her, but with both maiden and married names and some dates, she will be easier for research. The frame is a valuable antique in its own right, and has both easel back and hanging bale top. Measurements are noted directly on our photos (as usual).
Very good to excellent condition, for age and type - protected very well under glass. That backing appears to be vellum. An usual instance of a woman copying a painting of herself as a 9-year old. Very charming! Frame has not been polished, arrives with a patina equal to its age. Frame is original to the painting, c1870s or earlier. Heavy, it is dore bronze, or high bright alloy of similar make.
