A splendid composition of 3 hounds, dogs against a beautiful outdoor setting, landscape. The oil painting is 19th century, in the 19th century frame as shown. Artist signed, I believe it says "Gallard", and I have not researched yet. Found in France, it has the feel to me of it being a Swiss landscape. The dogs are spectacular, each one a perfect portrait. Looseness in the brush strokes hints at Impressionist influence. As noted, the painting was done on a mid-19th century 1/2" thick board, beveled edges from the backside. No canvas, so less inclination to chip or be damaged, torn, or even crackle to the oil painting. It's gorgeous! And you know old painting of hounds are rare and highly sought after. Full measurements noted on the photos, frame is 20 1/4" x 16 3/4" x 1 1/2" and the beveled board oil painting is 16" x 12".
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, the painting on board is excellent, no damage, holes, of course no tears and no chips to the oil painting. The old frame has aged well and is perfect for this painting - a gilded wooden frame with age evident but just enough to be an excellent frame for this painting. There is a hanging loop taped to the backside, and a hole for it if you wish to use the old hardware to hang. Very light losses to the fillet which has sculpted gesso adornment. Artist has signed lower right of the painting.
