A real woman, surely she's lived through the French Revolution and rise of Napoleon by the time this painting was made. Unsigned oil painting on stretched canvas, late 18th century to as late as around 1800, this is a portrait of a mature lady holding her book and pince-nez spectacles. She wears traditional period clothing with a lace cap and fichu (scarf) tucked into her stuff bodice. Stunning antique frame, wood with gesso appliqué corners, all in good condition and 230 or so years old. Frame is 20" x 23 3/8" and is 2 3/8" depth at the corners. The painting on its stretcher is 24 1/2" x 19". I have not taken her out of frame. It is possible a signature might be at edge, hidden by the frame rabbit. Beautiful old thing!
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, a 'folk art' feel to this painting, which is in good condition, and a gorgeous old frame which one would have to say is excellent for a 230 year old frame. No real losses, the finish is beautiful! Approx. 63 x 48.5 cm, the painting has some retouching, one small patch visible on back of canvas (see images), A fine c.1800 French frame in stucco, gold finish and silver accent.
