Portrait miniatures of children are rare. And of blond children, all the more so. This one is larger than most; the painting aperture is 3 1/4" in diameter, and the black wooden frame is 6" square. The painting has an Impressionist feel to it, and is splendid. A young boy, perhaps 3-4 years of age in oversized clothing of an older sibling, or room to grow. Blond hair in unmanageable curl gives him a mischievousness yet innocence that is so appealing. Perhaps a souvenir portrait while traveling with family on Grand Tour, there is a simple MM monogram signature lower right and no further information of artist nor identify of the boy.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type. A paper tag on back from framer, perhaps having refinished the old frame with lacquer. Cover glass is in place and I see no damage to report on this one. Measurements are noted on the photos.  Mid to late Victorian era, Napoleon III.
