There are 2 kinds of portrait miniatures. The 1st is the one of a kind portrait of a living person. The 2nd is the ones done as family or souvenir images, usually "aprés" or after a popular original painting of a famous individual, historical icons, or famous works of art. This is one of the 2nd kind, a painting of French King Louis XV, made for the Grand Tour souvenir. Louis V has a wonderful history, one you'll want to study. This miniature is a very nice hand painted miniature after one of the famous paintings of him, but would have been painted mid-1800s. The heavy elaborate bronze frame shows us it was one of the finer of the tourist trade paintings, as well. A signature but signed in initials. Louis is in armor, making him all the more appealing. Ready to hang.
Very good to excellent condition throughout. The cover glass is flat and it might well be a replacement. Painting is in gouache on thin wafer, a backing of vellum has separated from the wafer. Heavy cast bronze frame has a screw-mounted backing, further protecting the painting. Measurements are noted on photos.
