Signed "GÉRARD", the expertise in the portrait work and the era of painting seems to be that of Jean-François GÉRARD, dit FONTALLARD (Mézières, 1772 - Paris, 1857). Miniature portraitist, recent references noted in our photos (2 portrait snuff boxes 15 years earlier than this one brought 9000 GBP in 2019, sold as a lot). The age of this one would be c.1820-30. We do not know the ID of the sitter. The signature on this one was only revealed when taking her out of her frame mount, is hidden under frame when fully put together with convex cover glass. I am not positive this is by this artist. I will price it based on my purchase and not on the reference. An exceptionally beautiful young woman in elegant gown and with fabulous jewelry. Very good to excellent condition, obviously well-treasured, and not a flaw to the painting. Convex cover glass has one minuscule nip to edge, really out of view in the brass mount and recess made for it in the fine burl wood and shell-lined snuff box. An exceptionally fine collection piece, indeed.
