Elegant antique French Napoleon III or Victorian to early Edwardian era 13.5" altar style crucifix, a 13 5/8" gilded wood outer frame with deep red velvet mat, gilt wood cross and wonderfully detailed hand carved Christ figure or corpus with "INRI" plaque above! "INRI" basically stands for "Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum" or "Jesus the Nazarine, King of the Jews". A beautiful old piece, the red velvet mat and paper backing are likely restorations but well done and a striking decorative and/or devotional piece. The expired Christ hand carved in solid wood, the detail wonderful and the shadowing & aged patina or finish are visually pleasing to say the least.
Very good condition. As noted above, the velvet mat and paper backing are surely later restorations. Some slight signs of earlier separation of the arms at the shoulders on the Christ figure and a tiny nip/chip or two. Some scuffing to the gilded outer frame. See images for all measurements.
