This one is in excellent condition, and I had to consult my friends who are fan experts. These are not Asian, as I had initially been inclined to think, and no one seemed to be just certain if they're English or Continental, but they are apparently on everyone's "I want one!" list. Art Nouveau creation, most volunteered, so c.1900-1915. Charming little thing, a wispy see-through black mesh fabric as leaf, sequins emboidered to the leaf and as pupils in eyes of the hand painted owl. Full measurements noted on the photos. Very good to excellent condition for age and type, I can see 2 very minimal imperfections. First, it's a cut single leaf, and the weave of the cloth is very slightly fraying at the upper edges (typical). Second, there are contrasting roundels recessed into the sticks and some of those have gone missing (see photos). No damage to guards nor the impossibly slender ribs. No tears nor holes or splits in the leaf which remains firmly attached. No warping. Displays beautifully. The 18.5cm measurement is to the tips of the owl's ears which rise beyond the guards' length of 17.5cm. Isn't it the sweetest little thing!
