While the frame backing has an Amsterdam sticker, 20th century, this beautifully crafted portrait miniature dates much much earlier, mid-1800s, and would have been painted specifically for the tourist or collector market. It is not one taken from a sitting King, but painted "aprés" (after) one of the famous paintings of The Sun King, Louis XIV. From memory, it seems to me the original is on display at Versailles to thrill tourists even now.  This very adept artist would have painted these and others in multiples and offered them for sale much like hucksters now do keychains with the Eiffel Tower molded in questionable metal.  Who knows how many collections this painting has been in since painted, but someone had it mounted on a fabric backing and set into a nice old frame in Amsterdam, about c.1950s.

Very good to excellent condition, the painting is a fine little work of art. Amazing when you realize his face is only 1/2", chin to hairline.  No damage to the wafer, the painting, or the old original brass mat and cover glass. I did not open the back to access the portrait wafer, so all images are taken through cover glass. Still, it's quite amazing, Louis and his massive curly wig. You might wish to search his portraits online to see if you can detect which of the many has him at this stage of maturity, and in his ermine cape. The signature would be that of the person who painted this one, or a reference to the original artist of this pose. Frame is wood with gesso and is antique, but the re-setting of this miniature has been done mid-1900s. Measurements are noted on the photos. This would be perfect for a doll's house, actually.
