This painting is imperfect. It is also so charming, it's been on my walls for decades just as it is. The intimate little canvas is beautifully painted, a woman in her night clothes seated at foot of her bed in a detailed interior, and her lace cap is on her sweet little dog who begs at her command. So much to love in this one, but you have to accept it as it is. You can see evidence of very old restorations, both from the backside and the front. I'd thought a few times maybe I'd cut it down to eliminate the flaws, but I like the composition and the detail of candlestick and painting, night stand with pitcher and bowl. Perhaps you're talented and have the time to either do or contract a much nicer restoration, to bring her back to full beauty? Letting go of some favorites I've bought while on buying trips in France. Dating by portrait (which is nearly a miniature), this is c.1795-1815 in age. There is no artist's signature.
Good condition for age and type, as you can see and as described above, it has some restoration which will show if lighted, and less so if hung or on a shelf, not lighted. I've loved it long, and it's time to let it go. The plusses outweigh the negatives to me. Perhaps they will to you. Full measurements appear on the photos.
