Napoleon III (c.1850-70) French kiln-fired champleve enamel easel frame, bronze and gem-like palette, fabulous figural enamel butterfly, exotic bird, dragon and flowers. While it has an asian feel to it, it is definitely a French frame. I put it in Napoleon III era partly due to Empress Eugenie's penchant for Chinoise decor, but also because it is actually made for the carte de visite photos, popular in that era. The carte de visite is the first paper photo, small in size, a format of 4" x 2", and the first time multiple images could be made from a single negative. The outer frame is Very well crafted, metal slide-in backing with easel stand. Full measurements noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. No bends, no loss of any importance to the kiln-fired enamel. Glass is in place, sliding back moves smoothly, and easel stand is strong and firm. Heavy bronze. Stunningly beautiful enamel work.
