The coats of arms of the Holy See and Vatican City in the form that combines two crossed keys and a tiara was used as a coat of arms of the Holy See have origins attested from the 14th century. You see that crest carved here on this magnificent fronton, or top from a mirror or piece of furniture. The Holy See is the universal government of the Catholic Church and operates from Vatican City State, a sovereign, independent territory. The Pope is the ruler of both Vatican City State and the Holy See. Elegantly carved, I think either Italy or France. Don't shy away because it's imperfect - it's 18th century or earlier and entirely hand carved. Imagine an ancient elaborate tall mirror with this as it's ornamental top. Its history did not come with it, but the crest, alone, tells us of a lofty place in the hierarchy of the Catholic Church. You see 3 dogs, heads missing from 2. You see there are breaks with a fortification on backside that is SO old, itself an antique, you can fairly see a destructive moment in time where the furniture to which it was carved has been toppled. Begs to just be hung on a wall as art/sculpture, or raised just a bit on thick wire with a beautiful base and displayed as sculpture, don't you agree? Tempting to have it remounted to a tall slender mirror frame. You'll have the perfect way to display it. Large at 20" wide and 15" tall, it extends 3.5" out from flush mount on wall.
Condition is relative to its age, and the importance of the crest and carvings. You'll note that there are repaired breaks, some probably at least 200 or more years old, themselves. Two dogs missing heads, the one that is there has been reattached at some point. A bit of loss on both outer edges at base. It is braced and sturdy, however, and will be a thrill to own and display - very unique. This is the "Uncommon Treasure" kind of thing we're named for! Don't miss it!
