Just in from France and I completely apologize for not having given it a total cleaning and oil/wax before photos but I was just so taken by the nice large alter niche, I sort of visually bypassed the dust. I promise it will be very clean, beautiful finish on it for our buyer. That said, early to mid-1800s Neo-Renaissance carved figural niche, empty now of its figure or oriental vase/pottery figure for which it was made, it would be just fabulous as a display for your own collection. Dolphins flanking a slightly malevolent figure, though he does not have horns one can catch a hint of them. Classical pillars carved to the sides, and even sideview for this one is carved and splendid. It's a full 20" in height, and good sized throughout. Full measurements noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, I see one age/shrinkage hairline crack to the right of the figure as you look straight-on, visible and enlarged for your inspection. It's a factor of age and wood, and not an accident of being dropped. It's one thing to photograph a larger cabinet like this, another to see it in person. I can tell you, it is magnificent! A hint of the Gothic, as well. Oh, and yes, typical of old wood out of Europe, you will see a few woodworm holes. There is no active infestation - the holes are also antique. There is no pithiness to it at all, just the rather appealing holes, which reproduction furniture makers tend to paint on for the appeal and look of age. These are authentic. I would date this, as noted, early to mid-1800s. No other issued with it, no losses or chips.
