An exceptionally fine hand carved wood sculpture from the Anomalies movement, mid- late 1800s, the delicacy of the anatomical details on this bird and basket match holder is thrilling. On a fine and ornately trimmed plaque approximately 1/2" in depth, the piece is substantial for its kind at 11" tall, 7.75" widest and 2.5" at deepest. A full relief carving rather than usual bas relief, and in great condition.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type, I have marked a couple of small wingtip chips, but neither blunts the appeal nor visual of this bird. I see one or 2 leaf tips lost to time, but no damage to the woven basket which holds matches or perhaps spills (rolled paper wands used then to transfer flame from fire to candle or reverse. An oval emery paper striker there to the bottom, and original hanging hardware on back. This one will hang in my kitchen until you buy it for yours. An exceptional piece!
