Beautiful work! This is a cigar case, Napoléon III era (c.1850-70) in finest cordovan (Cardinal red) leather with a wide band of silk embroidery on silk, gold metallic threads worked in as well, in a motif that includes Sphinx on each side. The sleeve-style case would have been for cigars, but is wonderful to use for spectacles, or glasses, or even as an evening purse or palm clutch. I've used these before that way and they're a great conversation piece, making after-hours events so much easier to break the ice. Full measurements noted on the photos.
Very good to excellent condition, really seems barely used if at all. The leather is supple and without damage, and there is not so much as a pull on that broad band of silk embroidery. Figural, and so very Napoleonic in feel, gold and silver threads against that deep regal claret or 'Cardinal' red - a stunning work of sewing interest. No odor at all - use for your spectacles or dark glasses case, or even as an evening purse. Splendid! Just in from France.
