I've been a snuff box and portrait miniature collector for many decades, and it's time to let them all go. This is a superb 18th century French portrait miniature, c.1770-1790 from the clothing and hairstyle he wears, and it remains immaculate mounted on the very fine burl wood snuff box. Museum quality and yet unsigned. I have not taken him out of the mount so not certain whether there might be a signature at rim, covered now by the mount which is sometimes the case, or if there might be other information behind the portrait, though I don't anticipate any. The inner cover is loose so one could do so easily, but sometimes it's at risk of breaking the small painting so I have not. Sometimes a hand painted playing card, a lock of hair, an ID. Full measurements are noted directly on our photos.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type, the wood is just so beautiful as you can see. There is a natural flaw to wood at one spot along center outer box. A mount of brass and slightly convex cover glass are each in pristine condition, as is the painting they house and protect. Such a fine painting! That delicately captured face is only 5/8" from chin to hairline - such an art!
