Napoleon era painting, found in Germany, this 200+ year old large portrait miniature commemorates the clergyman, perhaps at the time of his elevation in ranking, you see the painted Papal crest and some writing above his shoulder. I'm not Catholic, and don't know much about the iconography, the hat, but note that the dignity and religious references are certainly important. Notable is the jeweled cross and gold chain he wears, as well. Notations on the vellum backing might give some indication of identity. AE CEO and some other notations yet to decipher - if you know more, please do email us and we'll add to our information on this exceptional painting. Full measurements noted on photos.
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. The frame is early 1800s papier mache and is formed with depth to center and ornamental top hanging apparatus. The miniature painting is both exceptionally fine and without damage or loss, protected under cover glass. Vellum backing fully intact. An exceptional painting and item. art
