Unsigned, but what a superb portrait artist, this one. That face is so expressive, with a hint of a sale and dimples. A jaunty yellow vest and the clothing of the c.1825-30s era of Louis-Philippe's reign. Mutton chop sideburns and the collar and cravat show a young man from a family of means and stature, ready to begin his future as same. We don't have identity. We don't have story. We just have this elegant young man on the precipice of the life he was to lead. Exceptionally fine painting on this one. His face is just 3/4" from chin to hairline.
Very good to excellent for age and type. The wafer is flat, undamaged, beautifully preserved beneath the original convex cover glass. Measurements are noted on the photos, and this is a generously sized portrait in its time. Frame is also in very good form.
