Of course I'm fascinated by these 18th century necessaire, loving travel and antiques as I do. This one is slender and simple, very nicely clad in what I think might well be elephant leather (look at the grain). The etui would have tucked easily into a pocket or saddlebags for travel in the late 1700s. As you can see, what remains is in wonderful condition. The scissors with hinged handles to fold even more slender for the etui. As is rarely the case, no missing tools, pocket knife, tweezers with ear wax spoon, a pencil or stylus and a pocket knife. All in all, one we're passing along as a project. Full measurements noted on our photos: Etui is 3 5/8" x 1 1/8" x 5/8".
Very good to excellent for age and type, both exterior and interior are very fine and well preserved. tools are superb and in silver, with handles on pocket knife in fine old cognac and chocolate shell. Note hairline at one pin. No bug bites. Complete and original.
