Dating from the mid to late 1800s, this campaign style box or case would originally have been fitted out inside with scientific, medical or surgical tools. I've done a bit of research and one can easily find similar Mathieu boxes for reference, complete or nearly so with their original contents. This one in superb exterior condition but missing all of the original fittings and tools, etc.. A wonderful decorative piece, solid walnut with polished brass cartouche, clasps and corners and all in near pristine condition. A wonderful old French box, rare to find them with the signed lock and just think of it this way, the interior is only limited by your imagination. Line with moire silk? Veneer with mahogany for a gentleman's desk or travel box? Fantastic!
As you can see in the images, the inside fittings and contents are missing, now simple with a rudimentary graph paper lining. The exterior is near pristine with no missing or restored brass accents. Original lock but missing the skeleton key, though there are clasps at each side. See pictures for measurements.
