Fabulous & rare antique French Georgian or Napoleon I era c. 1820s 10" gaming, playing card or sewing & work box, entirely covered in hand painted decoration including bird with egg filled nest, butterflies and ornate flowers & foliage! We had a similar piece a few years back, not quite as distinct in the hand painted decoration. The exterior beautifully hand painted, some wear in places but wonderfully preserved given the age, etc. The interior with the original paper lining, partitions in the base have us believe that it was meant to be a playing card or gaming chest though it could also have been fitted with trays and sewing implements, spools, etc. It could have even been an opulent confectioner's or chocolatier's box, filled with decadent bonbons and/or chocolates that could only have been for the wealthy of the time. Quite unique and stunning, don't miss it!
Very good condition, age considered. As you can see, there is wear to the painted decoration on the lid, mostly the center portion but you can still see the vines/branches & foliage surrounding the bird and egg-filled nest. Some rough edges or corners but the box is solid. Original pressed ormolu lion's paw feet & mother of pearl escutcheon. Comes with a key but I don't think it turns the lock. See pictures for measurements.
