This larger sarcophagus shaped sewing box is an interesting one, dark hardwood, possibly rosewood, inlaid with brass and stringing in a floral motif. The shape suggests decades earlier, but I think this one is Charles X to perhaps c.1850 - a Victorian aesthetic in the flowers, but Empire aesthetic in the shape. Some aspects seem French and others could suggest Italy. There are 4 carved mother of pearl silk winders, one missing one lobe's round end, and the niello-like work in metal on the needle case, thimble and stiletto is very interesting. Gold layering in florals against white metal which is not sterling silver. Those pieces and the spools, scent flask all fit perfectly into their recessed holders on the lift-out silk velvet tray. The 2 pairs of scissors don't quite fit - very close, but also owing to the slight age and design differences, I think those are both replacements in this set. A very interesting 2-tone gold handled set seems earlier and also is figural (I have not checked to see if that is karat gold, but I will). The steel handled set also seems just a bit earlier than the age of the set overall, in my opinion. Full measurements are noted on the photos.

Very good condition for age and type, with the notation that the scissors pairs seem to me to be replacements, however nice they truly are. All 4 carved mother of pearl silk winders are original and in their place, with 1 having just one outer round lobe missing - otherwise pristine on those, the stiletto, needle case and thimble. Scent flacon or bottle is also excellent, still has the stopper but it is stuck a bit in place and I'm not willing to force it. I see no chips nor flaws, and the cap seems silver. Unique and quite beautiful work in gold against bright silver metal, but it is not sterling silver (stiletto, thimble, needle case. The chest is a beautiful old thing, shows some age both in some surface splitting visible on the convex lid, and in some lifts to the white stringing. Brass petals and stems are in place but could use some polishing to brighten them more. Raised on bun feet, it seems to combine both French Empire form and Victorian era elements. It's 19th century for certain, not later than 1850s. The silk moire satin and silk velvet are each very nicely preserved for age. The lock would appear to work, but I do not have original key nor a match from our spares at listing time.
