Elegantly attired in an embroidered vest, high collar jacket and bow-tied cravat of her era, this young gentleman looks out at us from c.1835, Louis-Philippe era in France. Signed by the artist, or a notation of attribution to an artist perhaps added after the painting was done, by someone other than the artist. It reads, "ath. du Faget", I believe the artist’s signature on this miniature actually reads “Ath’lie du Faget”, which refers to Athalie du Faget, whose full name was Athalie Josephine Melanie du Faget (1811 - ca. 1844). Perhaps the artist can lead your research to this fine young man's identity and story.
Very good to excellent throughout. Even the old frame on this one is in superb condition. The wafer has been mounted with an outer border, which I have noticed done back then in Prussian regions of Europe, allowing the outer edge of the wafer to show. In any case, it is adhered, keeping it from warping, protected in its frame and under the original slightly convex cover glass. Measurements are noted on our photos.
