The caps are silver plate - the very thick plated ones that make them solidly French. Maker is by "Dubreuil, a' Pau", fine quality maker in Pau, France, located in the Aquitaine village that is, itself a work of art. Usually we find signatures of Paris makers, but this one is made quite different from the typical travel cases out of Paris. This one is thick solid hardwood, it's definitely beautiful. The wood of this box begs to be touched - it's fine furniture. The crystal jars are all in fine condition, no breaks. I'm bit in love with this set because the outer box is so spectacular, but it's got a wonderful set of boxes, jars inside, as well. That piano hinge opens the box to lie flat as you see in our images, and a slide button opens the compartment on the lid side, revealing the shaving mirror and vanity tools. There are tools that were in the set and original and while we are not selling those, we will include them as a free gift to the buyer of this vanity chest. Additionally, they comprise less than 5% of the total of the rather heavy old box. This one has a fine quality traveler's inkwell with it, a flask for liqueur (or cologne), and large powder jar and a rouge pot in addition to the 3 boxes. Fabulous set! We hate the idea of throwing away original pieces to a very old 1870-1900 set. Measurements: 11" x 7.5" and 3.5" thick when closed.

Very good to excellent condition for age and type. The parts we're selling include the box, or chest, which is all on its own a valuable hand made box, complete with wood dividers and rich hardwood, solid through. It is undamaged as to chips or cracks, no missing in all of that elaborately worked brass edging and engraved large cartouche. Working lock, but no key at listing time. We'll be searching through our spares to see if we can match one, will annotate the listing if we do find a key. Strong piano hinge and that green moire silk liner is also in good condition. The old mirror is intact, a little silvering speckling, but certainly usable. A beauty for display and so tempting to use for your own Grand Tour. NOTE: in one photo our photographer blurred the mirror to eliminate his reflection from the photo - the mirror is shown elsewhere so you can see it's intact reflectivity.
