Fabulous antique Victorian to early Edwardian era Swiss Black Forest hand carved 12 3/8" wide gloves or desk box, a lovely casket with foliate decoration, travel trunk style carved straps and wonderful condition! Someone's Grand Tour souvenir, no doubt, from a visit to Switzerland, this elegantly hand carved Black Forest glove box comes through the ages without so much as a chip though the interior silk or satin does show a bit of its age. Quite unique and finer than most! For some reason, I have always found the addition of carved or applied mother of pearl, etc. straps on boxes to be fantastic visually, they really do add something. Covered in a textured pattern with oak leaves on all sides, a few acorns here and there. Very attractive, a wonderful decorative piece!
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. I'm pretty sure the maroon or burgundy silk or satin interior lining is original and it does show its age some, frayed edges and a bit of staining in spots. Unfortunately, there is no key and our "spares" inventory is basically nill. All original hardware, lock, etc. intact though and I'm sure the lock would work if you could find a key.
