Wonderful antique Victorian to early Edwardian era Black Forest hand carved 12 1/4” wide cigar chest, presenter or tantalus with ornate floral & foliate decoration and four sliding trays to hold up to 44 cigars! Tantalus style, the entire lid and front panels lift up to open completely and display the four carved trays inside. Each tray with wonderful carved ornamentation and pierced grooves, eleven each for a total capacity of 44 cigars. The top of the chest with rose or flower accents on all four sides and a larger in the center. The front panel with a large pierced or reticulated carving of vines & leaves with a shield shaped medallion at the center. A fabulous decorative piece whether or not you’re a cigar or tobacco aficionado.
Good to very good condition. The exterior is beautiful, with just a small segment of the carved appliqué missing from the front of the lid (left side of the foliate strip). There are some visible re-glue areas on the inside of the lid (see pictures). The original brass piano hinge is intact but it is missing the side hinge “stops” on each side and one of the brass pieces from the left side. It also appears to originally have had feet of some sort, likely wood bun feet judging from experience. Working lock & key. See pictures for all measurements.
