Just a fun little Grand Tour trinket from Switzerland's master carvers, dating c.1880-1920, this is a smoker's stand, shown here holding some cigars and stick matches. Might well be used as a double open salt or sweetmeats service piece at table, should you prefer it. Charming no matter how you put him to use. The piece is 7.5" tall, and the Swiss mountain dweller holds out his cap to greet you. Very nicely crafted. Nicely preserved. Just fun! Full measurements are noted on the photos. Would also be fun with sewing items along with a collection of the small figural carved thread spools - you know the ones I mean, right? We have a few - ask if you don't see those (sold separately).
Very good to excellent condition for age and type. I would venture a guess that there has been a very old and nicely done repair there at his wrist where he holds out the hat. He's a delightful figure, full beard and great clothing detail, facial detail. Just a forest elf, perhaps? It always thrills me to see the skill with which those masters applied their carving expertise.
