Delightful pair of large Antique Victorian to Edwardian era likely Swiss Black Forest hand carved bear or cub figures with black glass or metal bead eyes, displayable in a playful position and wonderful decorative appeal! When these arrived from Europe, we were a bit perplexed as to how they were originally meant to be used or displayed. They really appear as if they were possibly part of a larger carving but there aren't any truly obvious signs of mounting, etc. The way I've chosen to photograph them seems to make the most sense, with one in a somewhat seated position and the other on its back as if they're cubs playfully pawing at each other. In any event, positioning can always be adjusted or one could incorporate them into some existing fixture, etc. Both hand carved form single blocks of wood, both with fine detail to the fur and painted accenting to mouth & tongues. Wonderful!
Very good condition. The seated bear has chips to the tips of his hears and his rear right paw has been broken off over the years. A slight age/drying split or two. See images for all measurements.
