Larger than most of these we find, this c.1900 Italian Grand Tour souvenir crucifix boldly presents 6 views of Roman architectural highlights. I've noted the names of each directly on the photos, all from memory. I love Rome! The colored glass tesserae (small fragments, tile-like) are painstakingly set into a plaster-like substance worked within the metal basin in the form of a crucifix. To have 6 views, and these important ones at that, is really quite exceptional, and the flowers of Rome filling in the partitions just beautifully. A more standard one of these, if you find them at all, range from 5" to 7", but this one is extra large. Full measurements noted on our photos. You know, we have sold a great many fine micro mosaic objects back to Italy, and then we travel and see them marked 3 times our price and on display in the antiques and jewelry shops in Florence, Milan, Rome. We just smile. If you have a Grand Tour coming, buy your souvenir from us and use the other 2/3 to play longer on your trip. Italy! Fabulous! Go!
Very good condition for age and type. You can see where I've marked with 'x', there are 2 little disruptions in the micro mosaic which have had a restoration to prevent further loss of tesserae. Additionally, note that the metal basin, which was cast of an alloy containing some steel, does have some surface imperfections, corrosion, typical of age. I have not tried anything to clean or improve it. I don't mind some age showing on a 120 year old souvenir. I mean, what will your printed t-shirt souvenir look like in 120 years, right?
