Delightful antique French Napoleon III or Victorian era ebonized 11" x 8 1/4" oval jewelry or dressing box, casket with large porcelain cartouche with hand painted floral garland and "Souvenir" inscription! Not sure from where this might have originally been a souvenir but that just leaves the possibilities wide open :). Heavy, solid wood with a carved or turned shaping on the lid and sides and a very Victorian ebony or ebonized finish. The interior also in finished wood, without fabric lining which would have been more common and there's the original thick beveled mirror mounted in the lid. The cartouche is porcelain, framed and mounted into the wood lid with the oval bronze or brass. Entirely hand painted with a colorful garland of flowers & foliage and tied in the center with a blue ribbon. The "Souvenir" in gold enamel with red shadowing. A lovely piece, just enjoy your European vacation and then come to us for truly superb souvenirs :), we're sure to have something fitting.
Very good condition. Some slight wear to the ebonized finish and a few surface marks as you would expect from a piece of its age but no chips, breaks, damage or repairs to note. The porcelain has no cracks or chips and there's just a bit of wear to the gold enamel "souvenir" text. Working lock & key also. See pictures for all measurements.
