Lovely antique Victorian era face screen pair with beautifully embroidered flowers & foliage on silk with piping edges and original turned or carved bone handles!  Wonderful, these make fabulous wall hung decorative accents and it is somewhat rare to find a matched pair.  Remember, they are 150-175 years old. Very nice, indeed. Measurements are noted on our photos. Face screens in Victorian times: These were used to provide visitors a hand-held protective screen so they could sit next to the warmth of hearth to visit, but would not get all blotched in the face by the direct heat of those large open fireplaces in Victorian mansions. Remember, makeup of that era had wax base, and it was also the case that not only cheeks would pink and blotch, but makeup might also melt a bit and run in direct heat. So these were essential for any well-appointed Victorian home.

Good condition.  As visible and noted on the images, it appears that the actual screens were once mounted horizontally and so there are the two small holes visible on one side of each.  There are also a few breaks/repairs to the carved bone handles.  I see no notable loss to the embroidery however.  One is 15.5" in length, the other 15.75" and the screens themselves are 9.5" x 8".
